How to Determine Bandwidth Needs When Building a Website

When you’re choosing a web host for your domain, you should factor in your required amount of bandwidth and how much it costs. To determine the bandwidth of your website, you’ll need to look at the number of site visitors, page views per visitor, and average webpage size of your site.

You may encounter unlimited bandwidth plans as you scroll through website options, but reading the fine print will tell you the truth—you’ll have to pay penalties if you go beyond what is determined as “normal” usage.

That being said, it’s crucial to know how much bandwidth you really need and what it means for your chosen web host. How do you determine how much bandwidth you need? Here are a few steps you should consider:

  1. Take a look at how many site visitors you get every month. You can quickly find this number from Google or WordPress analytics page.
  2. Check the number of page views per visitor. Your analytics dashboard will also show you this number.
  3. Identify the average webpage size of your website. You can use a tool that can give you the solution.

Once you identify these three numbers, follow this formula:

Monthly Website Visitors x Average Page views x Average Web Page Size

Here’s an example:

5,000 website visitors x 3 web pages x 2 MB webpage size = 25,000 MB or 25 GB per month.

By having this number, you can get an estimate of your bandwidth usage and predict your future bandwidth requirements. Then, you can find a website hosting service that can offer you about 50% more than this number, so you can have some room for new site visitors and new content.

Bandwidth is something you should know as you build your website, but don’t worry if you find your current bandwidth lacking. It’s something that you can upgrade or downgrade with your web host.
